Zero Carbon Aeron Chair – The Environmentally Friendly Chair
by
kozmicbluej
The zero carbon Aeron chair is designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick. The chair is ergonomically designed which means that it conforms to the basic structure of the human being giving support where it is needed. The Aeron chair is thoughtfully environmentally friendly because the two men used few natural resources in its construction. It is built to be long lasting, easy to take apart and recycle and it can be repaired if broken.
The Aeron chair is made from materials that can be recycled which is the main characteristic of the Herman Miller line of environmentally friendly chairs. This chair is not just an office chair, but an office chair that is made to make the user want to work long hours sitting in his body contouring chair. It also makes the environmentalists happy because it is made from recycled materials that can be recycled once the chair is no longer wanted and is taken apart to be recycled into something new – like another Aeron chair!
The aim of Herman Miller’s designs are for their products to be designed and produced in collaboration with Herman Miller’s products Environment team. The team actually uses designing methods that are geared to environment protecting methods. From conception to manufacture, a Herman Miller product is meant to use as little of unused natural resources as possible. That means from conception to production and after life, a Herman Miller product uses as much recycled material as possible and the end product can again be recycled.
Herman Miller line of products uses the McDonough Braungar Design Chemistry Protocol.
The McDonoough Braungar Design Chemistry Protocol is a system of design where each step in the design is evaluated for its environmental disposition. The first step in the Protocol is to evaluate the chemicals that will be a part of the materials that the product is being planned. Once a list of the needed chemicals is made, the process is to locate these chemicals from a safe source. The second step of the McDonough Protocol is to look forward to the eventual disassembly of the product. Can the product be disassembled and the materials be recycled is the question posed and determined by the Protocol team.
The certification of environmental products is done numerically. The Aeron chair is a 2 on the environmental certification list. The number 2 level of certification means that the materials used are environmentally safe and re-useable and the energy used in building the chair comes from 100% reusable energy.
The material used in an Aeron office chair is aluminium, steel, plastic, and foam. 94% of these materials are recyclable. The pre construction material used for the

is 53% from recycled materials. Which means that the Aeron office chair, a beautiful, ergonomically sound chair, is more environmentally friendly at the end of its existence as an office chair than it was when built.
